SAE J3106™ Level 1
SAE Level 1 - Driver Assistance
Level 1 driving automation refers to systems that can assist the human driver with either steering OR braking/accelerating, but not both simultaneously. The driver must still perform the remaining functions and monitor the driving environment at all times.
Examples of Level 1 Systems
- Adaptive Cruise Control (maintains set speed and distance from lead vehicle)
- Active Lane Keep Assist (provides steering input to keep vehicle centered in lane)
- Driver assistance parking systems (steering input to park, driver controls brakes)
- Emergency Brake Assist (supplements driver braking in emergency situations)
These systems can take over either the lateral (steering) or longitudinal (braking/accelerating) vehicle motion control, but not both at the same time. The driver must remain actively engaged in monitoring and performing the other portion of the driving task.
Human Driver Roles and Responsibilities
At Level 1, the human driver retains primary responsibility for safe vehicle operation and must be ready to perform the remaining driving tasks, including:
- Steering (if system controls speed only)
- Braking/accelerating (if system controls steering only)
- Monitoring the driving environment
- Responding to objects and events
- Obeying traffic laws
- Safe maneuvering of the vehicle
The driver must be prepared to take over steering and speed control with little or no notice, as Level 1 systems provide limited assistance only. The driver cannot disengage from the driving task.Level 1 systems provide a degree of driver assistance and convenience, but do not enable any self-driving capabilities. The driver remains fully engaged and responsible for most aspects of driving.
